Shilpa is born in a musical family and her ‘vocal art’ is a hereditary gift. She is the great grand-daughter of Late. Pt. Bhaskarbua Bakhle, a great doyen in Hindustani Classical Music. Shilpa has been learning music from her parents, Mr. Sudhir & Mrs. Shaila Datar and also taking guidance from her uncle Mr.Suhas Datar.Shilpa is a versatile singer in Hindustani Classical Music, Natyasangeet and Semi-Classical Music.She has sung in the C.D. ‘Devgandharva’, which is a compilation of the ‘Bandishes’ composed by Late. Pt. Bhaskarbua Bakhle. Participated in C.D’s ‘Ishwara Parmeshwara’ and ‘Pujjaya Raghavendray’ composed by a well known Music Director & Singer Mr.Shridhar Phadke. Play-back singing for a Marathi film - ‘Doghi’. Participating in newly launched programme ‘Wirasat’ A journey from Bandish to Bhavgeet’, which contains old Bandishies, Natygeet, Abhang,and Bhavgeet. She has also been performing with Shri Shridhar Phadke all over India and at various destinations abroad like China and UAE for the shows-‘Phite Andhareche Jale’, ‘Rutu Hirwa’ & ‘Babujinchi Gani’. The tradition of Indian Classical music is incomplete without the mention of Pt. Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale. Honoured as Deva-Gandharva, today his great-grand daughter, Savani Datar-Kulkarni is continuing his musical legacy ahead in the new century. For her , melodious voice is a gift by birth and music runs in her blood. her vocal music blossomed/ evolved in the music-filled environment of Pune Bharat Gayan Samaj, established by Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale himself in 1911. Savani was trained under the able guidance of her father suhas datar, uncle Sudhir Datar and grandsons of Bhaskarbuwa and also by senior classical vocalist, Shaila Datar. Listening to rare recordings of Master Krishnarao and Balgandharva, both being the disciples of Bhaskarbuwa and getting a chance to experience live performances of Pt. Ram Marathe, Swararaj Chhota Gandharva, Pt. Mallikarjun Mansoor, Pt. Gajananbuwa Joshi, Manik Varma, Balasaheb Mate established firm base of classical music for Savani . Bhaskarbuwa never undermined any type of music and Savani seem to follow the same tradition by being proficient in lite, semiclassical and classical vocal music. Savani completed her graduation from S.P. College and post-graduation in music from SNDT university. Many awards at the inter-college competitions, theater performances, recordings for albums and television serials has made this entire musical journey a memorable one. In recent months, savani have designed a special programmealong with her sister shilpa puntambekar, named 'Virasat'. Rare and special compositions by Bhaskarbuwa (Bandish), related pieces from Marathi musicals (Natyapada), Abhang, film and lite music bring out the essence of Indian classical music to the audience. She has also performed at prominent platforms such as NCPA, Dadar-Matunga Cultural centre, GanVardhan, Chaturang Pratishthan etc. Recently savani has worked with very innovative project for music beginner’s .in this project music lovers can learn basic concepts of music throw digital media .(VCD”S) which developed first time in this field.in this whole project savani performed as a lead role in explaining all the syllabus of pune bharat gayan samaj . Savani has been performing as lead female vocal artist for marathi musicals 'Sangeet Kulavadhu' and 'Sangeet GarvaNirvan'. She has also performed in many musical shows including 'Bola Amrut Bola', 'Mantaralelya Chaityrabanat – Navi Palavi', 'Nakshatranche Dene' and Shridhar Phadke's musical programmes such as 'Rutu Hirava' and 'Omkar Swaroopa'. She has been honoured as most prominent upcoming artist by Pune Municipal corporation. Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande award tops the long list of her accolades in the field of vocal music. In 2015 Savani Kulkarni Got an Award of Marathi Nattya parishad Mumbai for best sangeet Abhinetri for sangeet kulavadhu natak. Recently both Savani kulkarni and Shilpa Puntambekar performed in the most prestigious Sawai Gandharv Bhimsen Sangeet mohatsav Pune in 2015. Total performance was near about 1hour and 15 min. In this performance they sung Raga Multani , raga Marava , Abhang and Nattya pad of Bhaskar Bua bakhale’s most famous Sangeet Natak – Sangeet Swayamvar with original bandish.
